His Holiness, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, once remarked
that it’s unreasonable to expect to change the
world in the slightest degree. There are far too many
variables involved in such a stupendous task and
who’s to say you would know enough to make all of the right
changes here and there?
His Holiness felt that the way to change the world in any
meaningful and lasting way was to change the
source of the conflict - the person, or focal point,
that perceived the need for change in the world... YOU!
Being a life-long admirer and distant follower of the
Tibetan Buddhist doctrine, I agree completely that the way
to change the world around you, in any real and tangible way, is
to start within your own mind... your own heart. And one
of the best ways I know to begin that wonderful process is with
a good, inspirational story or a beautiful prayer.
It was the relentless, altruistic work of the Dalai Lama
that inspired me to post an inspirational story or prayer each
week from anyone wishing to send a good thought out into the
universe.
It’s so important to have the right perspective on life. Lord
Buddha once said that wrong views are the biggest
hindrance to self realization and being able to do
good work in the world. Having a bad attitude or
selfish disposition can wreak an enormous amount of
damage and havoc in the lives of others.
I once knew a guy who complained about everything that
went on in the world. The poor fellow was suspicious of everyone
and everything corporate. He couldn’t see the good in anything.
He was a local, gifted musician in North San Diego
County, California. He had ample opportunity to bring joy
and happiness to the lives of many listeners. Instead, he
spent the great majority of his time complaining about
how other less gifted musicians were always getting the good
breaks and the big deals.
This man couldn’t see the forest for the trees. There were
plenty of music industry notables interested in him as a
musician, at one time or another. The problem they had with him
was his refusal to follow simple procedures and
protocol that he was invariably asked to observe in
his dealings with these people.
I happened to run into this guy in a health food store one day
and we had an interesting, impromptu chat.
The meat of the conversation went something like this…
Musician:
Man, this is a messed up world. I’ve been playing my music for
years in this area and I can’t get anybody to sign me to a
contract. What the heck is wrong with this world?
Me:
Maybe it’s the way you’re looking at your situation that’s
creating your problems. You sing a lot about brotherly love and
mutual respect, and all of that, but your life is saying
something else. Maybe the people you’re trying to attract and
take serious notice of you feel uncomfortable with what they see
in you when you’re not playing music.
Musician:
I don’t get you. What are you talking about.
Me:
Well, you may think you have a God-given right to expect the
best in life, but that’s your thinking.
The world of pain and sorrow, sickness and hatred that you
perceive around you is, in pure point of fact, an exact
reflection of the turbulent world lurking within your
mind. In other words, what you experience is what you give out
to the world.
Musician:
That’s crazy, man. I’m just aware of the injustice that people
do in the world and you’re blaming me for that?
Me:
No, I’m not blaming you for anything. What I’m saying is you
should think about your attitude toward other people and the
world in general. Those aspects of the rough, tough, turbulent
world around you that you find so repulsive... the people you
steer clear of... the large corporations you detest, are all
interdependent parts of the One Life – God’s life, your life and
my life too.
Musician:
I’m not following you.
Me:
Look, I’ve got to go, but maybe you should think about
something. If you can agree with me that we’re all part of God’s
One Creation, doesn’t it make more sense to see how we can
continually help and serve one another rather than worry about
how much luckier this guy or that guy is than you and how
everyone is always trying to hurt or disrespect you in some way?
Man, you’re wasting a lot of energy and thought on something
that really doesn’t make much sense.
As I walked out of the store, I thought to myself, if you look
for pain and anguish, you’ll find it. If you look for joy
and happiness you’ll find that as well. It’s all in your
perspective of what motivates you.
How YOU can help Me help Others in need - - Good Samaritan
Outreach
This brings me to the central core and purpose of this column.
I need you to help me be a force for good
in this world. I need you to help me make a difference...
the kind that can change the direction of thought and action in
this world. You and I can make a difference and we can do it
NOW!
What exactly is it that I propose you and I do to start
making a difference? Simple!
With your help
I intend to reach out to the world once each week, for
just a few minutes at a time – with an inspirational story or a
fervent prayer - and help do God’s work. You and I can
change the world... change the way people look at themselves and
how they look at others.
Together you and I can help others - help the entire
world - to be more in line and tune with what the great
evolutionary plan has in store for us all.
We can help set the stage for a beneficial change
in Human thought, feeling and experience in this world.
Here’s a birds-eye view of my weekly proposition:
-
Meet me
here, at this website, at least once weekly, to share an
inspirational story or a prayer. We’ll be sending a lot of
strong, positive, loving thought out to those we know, don’t
know, and to the Earth. She needs our prayers as well. We’ll
do the best we can to change a lot of the negative thought
and feeling in the atmosphere today.
-
Set
aside the same day and time every week for your session – it
will carry more weight and power.
-
It
doesn’t matter in the least what religion you believe in or
if you’re atheist – all that is asked of you is to follow
along with a visualization prayer or with an inspirational
story for a few minutes each week.
-
Tell
anyone who you feel may be interested to also join our
sessions. The more people… the stronger the effect. They can
do this by simply turning on a computer, coming to this page
and, at the appointed time, begin reading the inspirational
story or prayer with concentrated interest and concern.
-
Devote
10 or 15 minutes for each prayer session. Concentrate on the
message of the inspirational story or prayer presented each
week.
If you can do these 5 simple but powerful steps once a
week – for 10 or 15 minutes each week – the effect on other
people who are sick, upset, stressed out, nervous, angry, testy,
depressed and out of sorts, will be incredible. It only
takes a few of us together, in unison, reaching out to ‘change
the world’ and make it a better place “in our own minds.”
The beauty here is that you’ll start seeing the change
you want in the world because you’ll be changing the one
thing in your life that requires the greatest change...
your mind!
Once
you start seeing the world as it really is through
Godly eyes, there will be little need to protest
every small matter that you feel is out of place in the
world. You’ll see how our sessions can help you accept
those situations that can’t be changed and how you’ll gain a
natural insight and intuition to know the best way to
change those circumstances in the world that must be changed.
Your weekly sessions can help you develop the powers of
discriminating awareness and skillful actions. In
short... you learn what to do and how best do it to make a real
difference in the world.
Interested? Sure you are. Our first few sessions will focus on
cleaning up your mind, emotions, and any
sicknesses within your body. After all, if you’re not in
relatively good health and spirits, there’s little
you can do for anyone else. So, we’ll get you off to a running
start.
Weekly Sessions Schedule - Submit your Prayers or Inspirational
Stories
I invite any inspirational stories or prayers you’d like to
submit so I can post them here at this web page. I’ll review
and post any that seem to cover issues common to the greatest
number of people or particularly unusual stories. Please
keep the length of your inspirational stories and prayers to
less then 500 words maximum.
I post at least one inspirational story or prayer
every Friday. If my computer is ever down on a given
Friday, I’ll post the reading Saturday morning.
Preferred hours of the day for your sessions:
-
Any day,
early morning, just after you awaken from sleep, and
-
Late at
night one hour prior to your intended bedtime.
-
FYI, I
personally do this every morning when I arise. I’ve done it
for so long, I don’t know what else to do with my early
morning hours. I especially set aside Sundays,
between 7:00 and 8:00 A.M., Mountain Standard Time, for my
weekly prayer/meditations. Join me!
The closer you stick to a normal routine with your
sessions, the better, quicker and longer
lasting will be the results. I’ll keep an active
archive at this website of all past sessions. That
way you can conveniently access any session at any time,
wherever you are.
The first session has an introductory section. Please keep a
copy of the introductory session. I won’t duplicate the
introduction for any subsequent sessions unless I feel it’s
necessary.
I’m glad you’re joining me in this wonderful
expression of loving kindness and altruism
toward our fellows. I pray that any merit which may
accrue from our fervent prayers and thoughts be
dedicated to the health, welfare and happiness of the
Humanity we love.
Remember, if you’re looking to change the world, send in
an inspirational story or a prayer (Please use the
contact form, don’t send as an email attachments). I will post them
your inspirational story or your prayer.
