Primary Care, Primary
Care Provider
What
Exactly Can A Primary Care
Doctor Do For You?
Although opinions
vary about the full scope of Primary Care health services, the widely
accepted definition of a Primary Care Provider*
is a traditionally trained Family Doctor, OB/GYN, Pediatrician,
Internist, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant capable of
performing the following functions:
-
Diagnosis and
treatment of uncomplicated, minor health issues.
-
Management of
long-term chronic illness.
-
Giving physical
examinations.
-
Giving
immunizations/inoculations.
-
Repairing
lacerations requiring stitches.
-
Preventive
health care education.
-
Determining if
and when a patient should be referred to a Specialist or other
Provider for continued care.
-
Fostering a good
relationship with patients and family to ensure current and intended
treatment /therapy is psychologically and emotionally acceptable to
patient and loved ones.
Besides delivering babies, performing diagnostic tests, prescribing
drugs and performing surgery, there is little else that is to be
expected of a Primary Care Provider.
That
being the case, an obvious question comes to mind...
If the
great majority of Primary Care cases seen are of a simple,
uncomplicated nature, why can’t these patients be seen by
properly trained Practitioners of different health care modalities
- such as Alternative Medicine Practitioners - who are trained to
handle many of these same kinds of Primary Care health issues?
*IMPORTANT
NOTICE: To keep this simple, straight forward and understandable for
you and for the purposes of this entire website, bear in mind that the
terms Primary Care Doctor, Primary Care Provider and Primary Care Family
Doctor assume a logical reference to traditionally trained Primary Care
Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.
